Birthdays are strange. They either overwhelm and surprise you, or leave you disappointed. Someone's "Lucky birthday" which is sometimes called your Golden or Grand birthday. Is when you turn the age of your birth day (e.g. being born on the 23rd of the month and turning 23 years old). Last Friday, the 27th, was my 21st birthday. So not my "lucky birthday". On the Monday of my birthday week, two thoughts were stirring in my mind. My ticket for a talk by Tracey Emin, my favourite artist, happening that evening at the Hayward gallery, London. Along with the thought of my birthday party in Liverpool at the end of the week.

As my Monday wore on I shared text messages with friends about our plans for my birthday party, with outbursts of excitement for Tracey. I was planning on buying the catalogue for her new exhibition and getting her to sign it before the talk, as she was meant to be signing copies. However I had also planned to bring along a blank home-made 21st birthday card, in the hope she'd see the fun side of my request and sign and address it to me with that all important sentence…'Happy 21^st birthday'.

Three o'clock, four o'clock, five o'clock... come on, half six! I want my card signed. Around 5.45pm a group of hardcore fans stand up from their seats and shuffle forward. Subtly carting bags full of books and posters they are acting casual, cool. But, looking very determined. Oh god, two of them have suitcases!? Ok I’m new at this, so I’ll take my cues from them. But I still have most of my pint left. And they are starting to form queue, for an empty desk? Ok. I quickly gulped down my drink. Trying to look as relaxed as I could. And scurried across.

I queued patiently with the mega fans, chatting as sharing stories. This is lovely, I thought, its like a mini community. Every couple of minutes the nerves and excitement would be cranked up a notch, with someone else mentioning how much longer we had left to wait.

Eventually, from the corner of the room a slim body, with sun kissed brown hair confidently walked towards us. Tracey Emin. Followed loyally by a team of assistants. She sat down, made eye contact with a fan, broke into one of her famous crooked smiles and warmly laughed at a team members joke. She's lovely! No worries. She WILL sign my card I can tell.

The queue moved surprisingly fast, before long I was next. Then, it was my turn. I stepped forward holding out my show catalogue and handed it over. She scribbled away on it. "Its my 21st birthday this week and... I've brought a birthday card. Would you sign my birthday card. Please. My name is David?" "Yesss. Happy 21st birthday David", she said smiling, holding out her hand to take my card. YES... She. Said. Yes. I walked away with my birthday card safely inside my exhibition catalogue. Thinking... so much for "lucky" birthdays.

David Lynn & Stephanie Hartman's Moving Image piece inspired from the Lethaby building at Central Saint Martins, Southampton Row, London.

Our aim was to capture the Lethaby building's atmosphere and architecture presenting it in a fresh light, by using unusual angles, repeated patterns and filming through glass crystals. After collecting a mixture of live action, still image photography and sound recordings from around the building as well as the building's archive. We layered and collaged this material along with our illustrations to form an authentically sourced response to our surroundings.

Swan | We succeed together

I decided to explore the theme of ‘we succeed together’. I began by visiting a local farm from where I grew up, and drawing from observation. Believing I would witness and hopefully record beautiful displays of partnership between the natural elements at the farm . The collaboration between the animals was the first thing that resonated with me. Visually you could see how the farm was in unison. The animals each illustrated how their biggest asset was each other by moving and exploring flocks. Generating a natural and organic chorus. One of my drawings was from a pair of swans standing on the edge of the lake. As I drew the swans I noticed how one of the swans was clearing away some leaves and mud that the other swan had on its chalk white feathers. And then I remembered how when swans find a mate, they keep that mate for life. Experiencing and accomplishing life together, side by side. This successful pairing encapsulated the theme I wanted to explore. With this sentiment and swan’s natural elegant form I was inspired to develop my drawings of the swans more. Therefore I returned to my original drawings afterwards and made some monoprints from them, deciding they would have more emotional marks from using this medium. I concluded be scanning the monoprints along with watercolour sketches to further develop them digitally.

I also created a piece the same way but illustrating the instinctive partnership between the chickens and hens while they were fed. Interested at how they each respected one another’s space, whilst being incredibly close together. Which meant they all ate as a community growing, and moving forward together.

While rooting though a junk shop I found a copy of the Liverpool Echo at the time of the Royal wedding between Charles & Diana. It was a 'Royal Wedding Souvenir Special'. Being fascinated by Diana and the position she came hold in the world's heart. As well as her demise inside one of the biggest, oldest, richest institutions AKA The Royal Family. I HAD TO BUY IT. Lucky it didn't cost anywhere near what I thought it would, and it was mine for.... 50p!

Patti Smith, one of the people I find most inspired, and able to create poignant work from careful heartfelt observation. She has been interviewed by The Guardian for their 'Saturday interview'. I was so excited when I saw the interview on The Guardian homepage, after reading I felt satisfied and full from a reassuring heart warming helping from a true artistic maverick. She is really something.

I read her book 'Just Kids' (which won a National Book Award) and found it powerful, more than a memoir, and more of a comment on the power of human connections. Reminding the reader how the relationships we form can not only transform and reconstruct our lives. But our connections can transform the world.

I was so exhilarated by the book I ended up buying it for one of my best friends and underlining & annotating all the parts I found powerful, and potentially life changing. Yes life changing. Because if someone can describe and confidently discuss something that you can taste, you can feel but can't quite 'pin down' yet. Then you've got life changing material on your hands.

After reading The Guardian's interview I read some of the comments added below by readers, which I found just as moving as the article. I even added my own (see below). Read Patti Smith's article here

I have started recording Gateacre Community Comprehensive school (my secondary school) as it is due to be demolished this year as the school moves to a new site. This is obviously a fantastic chance for the school to gain bigger & better facilities, bringing the school into 2011. But for past students like myself we are loosing a lot of strong memories from our adolescence. Below are some of my photographs of the school I took just before christmas. I also did some filming there and when I have edited/finished that will post that up on my blog too.

My Grandma kindly let me scan in her photographs from when she met Princess Diana. I really think there're fantastic, I like how you feel the role of the observer in them. Some of the photos have a strong theme of surveillance, which for me creates something symbolic that speaks about how distant and isolated Diana was at times from people and the parts of life she loved.

On Remembrance day this month I went for a coffee on my own after university. It was dull and dark, you could really feel winter was here. Sat opposite me in the coffee shop were some older gentlemen dressed with what looked like army clothing (blazers, meddles etc). Each of them had a poppy fastened firmly to there chests.

Rachel Whiteread | Drawings

This week I visited the Rachel Whiteread exhibition at Tate Britain, titled 'Drawings'. It is a display of her drawings from over the years. She has always drawn and treated drawing as a crucial part of her creative process, even if she is more well known for her sculpture work.

As with her sculpture the themes of people and singular lives are still explored through her drawings. You can almost hear her analysis, exploring the traces left by people living their daily lives, like whispers from the back of a bus. Her personality came across stronger than it usually does in her work, the drawings are more personal, and intimate, sometimes you felt like you were prying rather than viewing. But you are learning something more about Whiteread the 'person' or 'artist' walking around these pieces, and that captivates you.
She is portrayed, calm, consistent and precise. The kind of artist that flourishes organising the unordered fast moving world we live in. Subtle texture like the gloopy resine in her line drawings, played an important part in conveying the emotion she has with her subject material. This sincere, considerate approach Whiteread takes to her concepts, is what holds the strength in her practice. And ultimately, leads to her success in an previously un-exhibited branch of her art.

Lately I've really enjoyed illustrating bikes and the movement of them, or the static element of a inactive one. I don't really know why but I just keep feeling the urge to record different ones I see (and I see a lot being in London).

Heres some research from my sketchbook, the photograph is of a park in Liverpool. The colours in the photograph are so rich and warming. It was actually taken on a really cold day even thought the tones in the image don't suggest this.

Below is some mark making experiments, I'm planning on working into them more and building a more defined image but theres something about the innocence of the colours & marks in that raw form I really like. There something really expressive in those lines & smudges.

One of my latest briefs was "Objects of undesire" where we had to illustrate four issues/behaviours/objects/activities that may frustrate, anger or irritate us. They could be a serious of playful as you liked. My four where more about an underlying attitude that I disliked.

- Cyclists that ignore red lights at crossings

- Pretentious posers in unsuitable environments i.e. Tesco

- Employees that smoke outside their company entrance (cafe's, restaurants etc not offices)

- The taste police

I miss colour. Rich, deep, expressive colour, after endlessly mono-printing in a romantic and soul healing manner using earthly light amounts of greasy black paint. I'm back knocking on the door of colour with my bags to move back in. With serious plans however, to keep mono-printing.
